The effectiveness of art has a unique character. It defines art. If art is not effective it is not art.

The ways in which art is effective turns the world of effectiveness in organisations on its head.

In many organisations effectiveness is defined as the measure to which a predefined goal is achieved by the activities employed.

Another way to see effectiveness to look what the actual effect of the outcome is. An outcome with unforeseen edges or surprising qualities. An outcome as the result of an endeavour with an impact on the current and even the future. Not as a result of a goal set in the past.

An outcome which embodies the process of making by the actors involved. An outcome that radiates the makers’ convictions and intentions. An outcome as the manifestation of discovery, doubt and the actual making. An outcome as the materialisation of presence.

These properties of what is effective, allow for another kind of organisational thinking and acting. It could be even a more realistic and natural way to go. Not as a way to totally discard planning and control mechanisms, they are productive to a certain extent, but as a possibility to reveal unseen vistas and to avoid being blindsided by the illusion of makeability.

This update investigates in a particular way alternative contours to define effectiveness. Not to find the answers but to reflect on the meaningfulness and materiality of what effectiveness implies, by offering a combination of drawings and texts.
